If you are on the internet, you know that flash is everywhere. If you are using hardy heron, you also know that the version of flash in the ubuntu repo is OLD. Installing 11.2, the latest version adobe makes for linux, is really simple. Head on over to the adobe website, grab the tar.gz for other linuxes, extract it and grab the libflashplayer.so, toss that file into /usr/share/mozilla/plugins, and voila, newer flash!
The openoffice that ships with hardy and can be gotten through ubuntu is 2.4.6, getting it directly from openoffice.org can get you up to the CURRENT version, 4.1 . Grab your language's deb pack from http://www.openoffice.org/download/other.html#aoo , then exract it to a directory and in a terminal run "sudo dpkg -i *.deb" BOOM, modern day office software.
Azureus in the ubuntu repos is a bit OLD, I lie, it's very old. I had the hardest time finding a torrent client for 8.04 that would accept magnet links. I remembered that azureus was written in java, and since we upgraded our java last post, it should be ok to push it a little further. First step is to install azureus from the ubuntu repos, then grab the newer jar from http://sourceforge.net/projects/azureus/files/x_obsolete/vuze-4.3.1.4/Azureus4.3.1.4.jar/download . Using a sudo'ed file manager of your choice, rename the newer version jar to Azureus2.jar and overwrite the file in /usr/share/java . Pirate bay here we come.
I may be flipping distros to scientific/redhat/centos since the 5.x branch is still actively supported until 2017, if I do I will continue updating this blog, though the title will be a bit misleading at that point.
